In April of 1913, a young couple, Ernest and Alvena Uebersax, began their lives together. Soon after their marriage, they opened their first bakery located on what was Columbia Avenue (but has now been renamed Washington Boulevard). The Uebersax bakery had grown exponentially and so was their family. With the addition of two young sons and a daughter, the Uebersaxes decided to move their bakery to Oliver and Montford Avenue. The bakery continued to be successful and in 1927, the Uebersaxes moved the bakery to Fenwick Avenue. During this time, the Uebersaxes also managed to add another son and daughter to their lives.
In 1952, Ernest and Alvena retired and passed the business onto their eldest son, Walter, who became the President of the Fenwick Bakery. The middle child, Edward became the head baker, who ran the shop using most of his dad's original recipes. Marta, the eldest daughter, worked for years serving all of Fenwick's finest customers.
In 1971, the bakery moved to its present location at 7219 Harford Road. Walter, Edward and Marta then retired and passed the bakery onto one of two owners, Michael Meckel. Michael Meckel is a dedicated Fenwick employee and has been working with the business for over 20 years. Currently, he is the President and the head baker of Fenwick bakery. Claudette Wilson, the owner of the other half of Fenwick, has been with the business for over 40 years and is the head decorator. Both Michael and Claudette use the same principles and goals to run the business as Ernest and Alvena and have even managed to use the same recipes.
The Fenwick bakery is most known for its exceptional wedding cakes which have been enjoyed by customers for three generations. Fenwick is proud to be able to make 25th and 50th anniversary cakes for those who purchased their original wedding cake from the bakery.
In addition to traditional menu items, Fenwick has also added some modern concepts. The bakery now offers chocolate, marble, amaretto, lemon, orange, spice and carrot dough as well as Strawberry shortcake (in season). The Fenwick bakery is proud to say that every item sold on the menu is baked fresh on the premises.
